Valerie West is the owner of Just Effective Training (JET), a business that specialises in customised business training programmes and facilitating contracted programmes.
Valerie has over 20 years’ experience in business education. She currently facilitates the Certificate in Small Business Management and Project Management (NZQA Level 4), Smart Steps to Business (NZQA Level 3), and Certificate in Money Management (NZQA Level 3) programmes at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. Previously, she taught the First Steps to Business (NZQA Level 2) and Certificate in Small Business Management (NZQA Level 4) programmes.Valerie has also tutored in business administration and computing for NorthTec (NZQA Levels 2–4)—this is now an online programme delivering the New Zealand Certificate in Business, Administration, and Technology (NZQA Levels 3–4). She has facilitated two programmes for the Māori Women’s Development Corporation, as well as the Commission for Financial Capability’s ‘Get Sorted’ Programmes. In addition, Valerie developed a Steps to Employment programme for Far North Adult Literacy, which embedded literacy and numeracy skills into the programme.
Valerie holds a National Certificate in Adult Literacy Tutoring (Level 5), a Certificate in Adult Teaching (Level 5), a National Certificate in Adult Education and Training (Level 5), and a National Certificate in Adult Literacy and Numeracy Education (Level 5).Valerie also holds a Certificate in Supervisory Management from the New Zealand Institute of Management and received the award for top student in New Zealand 1993 from NZIM.
Valerie has been the owner of Just Effective Training (JET) since 2006. Before then, she worked as an Account Manager and Sales Trainer for David Forman New Zealand (a business training company) and as a Business Development Manager, Account Manager, Trainer, and Coach for Mapping the Gap, a business coaching and management training company as well as working as a Sales Consultant for Rentokil Healthcare and a Sales Underwriter and Regional Manager for Combined Insurance Company of New Zealand (Healthcare Division).
Local Networks and Change
Through her work in business education Valerie maintains strong contacts with a wide range of people in her local community and from her past tutoring roles. She also has a real sense of how people are adapting to a rapidly changing world through her work on health surveys. Valerie maintains professional contacts with many individuals working in organisations in the Far North. Her focus is on the evolution of technology and how this is changing the workplace and the opportunities for business.
