Rā Winiata (Ngāti Ranginui and Ngāti Porou) is the director of Indigenous Development Group Limited, a consultancy, and Indigenous Limited, a design company. He works as a kaiako for Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, covering Tauranga, Whakātane, and Ōpōtiki. Rā has also worked in management roles in previous jobs for Trust Bank Wellington, Presbyterian Support Services, and the New Zealand Red Cross. He is currently a chairman and trustee of Ngai Tamarawaho Tribal Authority Trust, a Post Settlement Governance Entity (PSGE).
Rā has extensive experience in business education and business mentoring. Since 2003, he has been a facilitator for several business courses with Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. These programmes include the Certificate in Small Business Management (NZQA Level 4), the Diploma in Small Business Enterprise (NZQA Level 5), the Certificate in Money Management (NZQA Level 3), and the Post Graduate Diploma in Business Entrepreneurship.
Rā has delivered Māori governance programmes for Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology’s Manu Taiko Certificate in Māori Governance, as well as Te Wānanga o Aotearoa’s Diploma in Māori Governance and Leadership. Rā was awarded a contract through the Ministry of Business and Innovation’s Te Pūnaha Hiringa (Māori Innovation Fund) to deliver governance training and strategic planning courses for Māori trustees. In 2017, he also worked with Te Tumu Paeroa and the Commission for Financial Capability to deliver programmes for Māori land trustees to improve their governance and financial capability.
Rā holds a Bachelor of Management Studies (Business) from the University of Waikato. He also received training from the Bay of Plenty Business Development Board in the area of completing business appraisals / capability assessments, which he has put to use as a business and marketing consultant. Rā also holds a Diploma in Adult Teaching and was awarded the Exceptional Adult Learners Award in 2012. He has achieved Te Ara Reo Māori levels 4 and 5 (Diploma) at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.
Rā is the director of Indigenous Development Group Limited (IDG), a consultancy company, which was incorporated in 1997. It specialises in the development of Māori and Pacific organisations with a kaupapa of “He Whiwhinga Mahi Hiranga me He Whakapapa Tuturu” (Achieving Business Excellence with Cultural Integrity). Since 2003, IDG has held numerous contracts with Te Wānanga o Aotearoa to deliver business programmes in Tauranga.
Rā is also the director of Indigenous Limited. This company specialises in providing indigenous designs, supplying products, such as Māori designed mink blankets, to The Warehouse.
Rā is highly involved in the local Tauranga Māori community, working alongside all three of the local iwi within Tauranga-Moana and also with Māori non-Governmental organisations. He has also had a role in assisting Land Transport New Zealand to build relationships with iwi throughout the Bay of Plenty Region. Rā is a member of the Māori Business Network, and he has worked with organisations such as Te Tumu Paeroa and the Commission for Financial Capability.
