Gardenia (Midge) Te Kani (Te Aitanga-a-Māhaki, Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Maniapoto, Rongowhakaata, Ngai Tāmanuhuri, and Tūhoe) lives in the Gisborne region. She has over 10 years’ experience in business education.
Midge has been facilitating programmes for Te Wānanga o Aotearoa in Wairoa and Gisborne since 2006. She has taught the Certificate in Money Management (NZQA Level 3), the Certificate in Small Business Management (NZQA Level 4), and the Certificate in Small Business Management and Project Management (NZQA Level 4).
Midge also has teaching experience as a primary and secondary school teacher, including at Te Kura Reo Rua o Waikirikiri, Gisborne. Her teaching philosophy embeds ngā āhuatanga Māori: aroha, manaakitanga, and kotahitanga, which she incorporates into her daily teaching practices and routines. Midge has also taught at Te Karaka Area School, where she developed a programme to support students transitioning from school to the workforce.
Midge has also worked as a facilitator for Poipoia Te Mokopuna, Te Whare Hauora o Te Aitanga-a Hauiti, designing and implementing early learning programmes for “At Risk Whānau” and providing advice on parenting and early learning within the home. In addition, she has been an independent contractor for the Māori Women’s Welfare League, where she created and implemented a financial literacy programme.
Midge holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing) from Victoria University, a Diploma in Business Studies from Tairawhiti Polytechnic, a Postgraduate Diploma in (Primary) Teaching from the University of Waikato, a Certificate in Real Estate Sales from the Open Polytechnic, and the National Certificate in Adult Literacy and Numeracy Education from Literacy Aotearoa.
Midge is a company director of Tihi Innovations Limited (previously known as Gardenia Te Kani trading, and TKN Research), a business which provides education services. She is also the ANCO Co-ordinator for Te Kura Reo Rua o Waikirikiri, a bilingual school. In addition, Midge has 10 year’s experience with New Zealand Playcentre, including roles such as Regional Education Member, National Education Team Member, Tutor, Centre President, and Regional Māori Partner Representative for Waikato.
Midge is a member of the Māori Women’s Welfare League, Mangatu Branch. Midge is also affiliated with Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngā Uri o Māui and is a trustee for Te Kumi Marae, Te Kūiti, as well as Treasurer for Mangatu Marae, Gisborne.
